Health care workers rallied in front of Thunder Bay’s regional hospital Tuesday, warning provincial moves to allow more private procedures could worsen staff shortages.
THUNDER BAY — Health care workers from five Ontario unions came together Tuesday to demonstrate strong opposition to new provincial legislation expanding the role of private clinics in Ontario’s health system.
Around 75 people rallied at entrances to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, and later submitted a petition to hospital leadership urging CEO Rhonda Crocker Ellacott to join them in publicly opposing Bill 60.
The petition was signed by over 1,300 hospital staff members,
A Kimberley-based physician, Dr. Ilona Hale, and a team of health care professionals, have produced a new resource, specifically aimed at clinicians called ‘Planetary Health for Primary Care’.
“It’s an online guide for healthcare providers meant to make the job of reducing our environmental impact in healthcare easier,” said Dr. hale. “The Planetary Health for Primary Care guide offers a new way to think about the problem and practical tips on incorporating solutions into everyday clinical practice.”
“I think a lot of people in health care are looking for ways to make a difference,” she said.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -US President Joe Biden on Friday announced new steps to crack down on short-term health insurance plans and surprise medical bills, stepping up his war against so-called junk fees to lower healthcare costs.
This will include a proposed rule that closes loopholes companies use to offer misleading short-term insurance products, discriminate based on pre-existing conditions, offer little to no coverage and saddle consumers with thousands of dollars worth of medical expenses, Biden said.
“It’s not necessarily about healthcare, it’s about being played for a sucker,” Biden said at a White House event announcing the policies.
