USDA Launches Feds Feed Families 2023 to Combat Hunger and Improve Access to Healthy Food

WASHINGTON, June 28, 2023 – The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) shepherded in the 2023 summer campaign of the Feds Feed Families program, a voluntary food drive that encourages federal employees to make in-kind contributions, including food, services, and time, to food banks and pantries of their choice. Two nonprofit food banks in Jacksonville and Gainesville have merged, creating a regional operation that serves 265,000 people across North Florida.

Jacksonville-based Feeding Northeast Florida, the region’s largest food bank, was established in 2014 and distributes food to the needy in eight counties. The 35-year-old Bread of the Mighty in Gainesville helps ease food insecurity in five counties.

As of May 1, the smaller food bank became a branch of the larger one.

The Write-Right Nutrition Program (WRNP) hosted a free nutrition literacy community workshop at the Niagara Falls Public Library on May 25.

Organizers called the event a huge success as participants learned the benefits of a well-balanced diet, healthy food substitutes/alternatives, and important nutrient information.
