There’s a lot of talk these days about an increased role for private health-care clinics in Canada, sparked in part by Premier Doug Ford’s plans to significantly increase the number of Ontario surgeries done in for-profit clinics.
Despite promises from Ford and others that it will streamline services and solve the issue of long wait times, health-care professionals that CBC News interviewed say there are nuances and that such happy outcomes are not borne out by the data.
In fact, data from BC and from other countries suggests private, for-profit surgery clinics will likely increase the true cost to taxpayers
The US Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee recently held a hearing examining health care workforce shortages. Mon. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., chairman of the committee, said the lack of health care workers would result in many patients not being able to get access to health care.
“We simply in our nation do not have enough doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, dental hygienists, pharmacists, mental health providers, among other medical professions,” Sanders said.
In response to the shortage, area hospitals are working to address employee burnout, attract new talent, and fill gaps with other means, including innovation with telehealth options.

A prominent group of nurses in California slammed a state plan to rollback masking and COVID-19 vaccine requirements in health care settings starting in April, arguing that the decision puts health care workers at risk.
The condemnation came Friday after the California Department of Public Health announced earlier in the day that it will no longer require masks to be worn in indoor high-risk and health care settings nor require health care workers to be vaccinated for COVID-19 starting April 3 .
