Known as “food insecurity,” this problem was already rising when the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits – previously called food stamps – were cut in 35 states this spring. Healthy Eating Workshop a big success | Local News

The Write-Right Nutrition Program (WRNP) hosted a free nutrition literacy community workshop at the Niagara Falls Public Library on May 25.

Organizers called the event a huge success as participants learned the benefits of a well-balanced diet, healthy food substitutes/alternatives, and important nutrient information.

Major Robert Restaino attended the event and shared a few words of encouragement to the workshop participants.

New nutrition guidelines for children aim to help schools prepare healthy meals in appropriate portions

Serving some 24,000 children each year, the firm said it hopes the new guidelines can further enhance both its in-house and outsourced meals.

Grocery prices making healthy food unaffordable for BC families, report says

Many BC families in lower-income households cannot afford to have healthy, nutritious diets due to food costs.

A BC Center for Disease Control report, Food Costing in BC 2022found that the average cost for a nutritious diet for a family of four in May and June 2022 was $1,263 per month.

“Food insecurity is a significant public health issue,” said Dr. Geoff McKee, BC Center for Disease Control’s medical director of population and public health.

“The price of food does not affect everyone equally and the root cause of household food insecurity is low income.”
