Premier Team Houston speaks at PC party AGM

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is reassuring his party faithful that he still intends to fix the province’s health-care system at whatever cost it takes.

During his keynote address at the Progressive Conservative Annual General Meeting, Houston said Saturday he would make whatever financial investment is needed to turn the health crisis around.

The premier — who campaigned on fixing Nova Scotia’s struggling health care system before its August 2021 win — says a lot of work is needed, “progress is too slow, and the stakes are very high.”

Houston says his heart goes out to the families of a

Can the state’s new behavioral health centers impact care?

Jennifer Knight-Levine said the state’s new Community Behavioral Health Centers were a great idea — but she’s not sure how much impact they’ll have on the mental health care crisis.

“They will absolutely serve the needs of many of our community members,” said Knight-Levine, executive director of the SAFE Coalition, an organization which focuses on troubled teens. “I think the most challenging piece is getting the staff hired to really run and fulfill all of those community needs.”

For that reason, Knight-Levine doesn’t predict a massive impact on wait times for clinical appointments — as there’s only so much that

Concerns abound regarding the new PEI med school

A new medical school at the University of Prince Edward Island is set to start its first class training in fall 2024. But the nagging question is, with ongoing doctor shortages on the island, who’s going to teach?

Construction is already underway. Officials have signed agreements with Newfoundland’s Memorial University to develop the program and are working on accreditation, but who will staff the program has yet to be announced.

That’s the pinch point for Dr. Michael Gardam, Health PEI CEO.

Gardem and other senior officials answered questions for the health committee Wednesday, among them concerns about whether the medical

Poor oral health may affect brain later on: early study

An early study has shown keeping your gums and teeth healthy may have added benefits for your brain health.

Preliminary research, set to be presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference next week, suggests adults who are genetically prone to poor oral health could be at a greater risk of showing signs of declining brain health.

Since the results are preliminary, the researchers say more evidence, including through clinical trials, and a more diverse pool of subjects, is needed.

“What hasn’t been clear is whether poor oral health affected brain health, meaning the functional status of a person’s

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Allegheny Health Network is changing the way elective surgeries are being done.

Dr. Michael Levine has performed several thousand hip replacement procedures in his three-decade career.

“When I first started, people would come to the hospital the day before, have the surgery and then stay a full week,” said the chief of orthopedic surgery at Forbes Hospital.

But these days, patients are barely at the hospital for a full day. And in

How to Saute without Oil (Dry Saute – NOT in water)

How to Saute Onions without oil

The consumption of oil is associated with a number of diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, gallbladder disease, and arthritis. But how do you saute without oil?

No water! No broth!

I’ve seen many suggestions/recipes for sauteing in a little water or vegetable broth instead of oil, but (in my opinion) that method just doesn’t do it. The onions taste steamed, not sauteed.

Here’s a method that enables you to brown onions deliciously – without dropping oil. We call this dry saute.

1.Choose the right size pan.

You don’t want to crowd the onions, so

Six Healthy Lifestyle Habits Linked to Slowed Memory Decline

Adhering to six healthy lifestyle behaviors is linked to slower memory decline in older adults, a large, population-based study suggests.

Investigators found that a healthy diet, cognitive activity, regular physical exercise, not smoking, and abstaining from alcohol were significantly linked to slowed cognitive decline irrespective of APOE4 status.

After adjusting for health and socioeconomic factors, investigators found that each individual’s healthy behavior was associated with a slower-than-average decline in memory over a decade. A healthy diet emerged as the strongest deterrent, followed by cognitive activity and physical exercise.

“A healthy lifestyle is associated with slower memory decline, even in the
