Seven healthy habits may help cut dementia risk, study says | Dementia

Seven healthy habits and lifestyle factors may play a role in reducing the risk of dementia, according to a two decade-long study.

Being active, eating a better diet, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, keeping blood pressure normal, controlling cholesterol and having low blood sugar in middle age may all lower the chances of developing conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease later in life, research suggests.

The preliminary findings, from a study that followed thousands of US women for about 20 years, are being presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual meeting in Boston.

Forgot the 5-a-day, try the 3:2 ratio

Eating five fruits and vegetables each day has been the message peddled by health gurus for decades.

But now experts say it’s time to rebrand the advice.

Dr Duane Mellor, one of Britain’s top dietary researchers, recommends following the little-known 3:2 ratio.

That is, eat at least three vegetables and two pieces of fruit every day.

He claims it can offer more variety — because there is a more diverse range of vegetables — and they tend to be lower in calories and sugar than fruit.

Health bosses advise eating at least five portions to boost levels of vitamins, minerals and fiber as well as maintaining a healthy weight and heart. Seven strawberries, 12 grapes and one banana counts, as does two satsumas, three apricots and half a pepper
