US Life Span Falling Behind Our Peer Countries

March 6, 2023 · 7:29 AM

From NPR:

The average life expectancy for Americans is shortened by over seven months [in 2021]according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That decrease follows an already big decline of 1.8 years in 2020. As a result, the expected life span of someone born in the US is now 76.4 years — the shortest it has been in nearly two decades.

But we still have the best healthcare system in the world, right? Not if you judge it by life expectancy. From Health System Tracker:

“We believe it’s a step in the right direction,” Stefanson said in an interview with Global News on 680 CJOB in Winnipeg.

  • A new study suggests that tree nuts may reduce certain risk factors for cardiovascular disease by modifying the metabolism of L-tryptophan, an amino acid.
  • In a controlled parallel trial, people with obesity or overweight who snacked on tree nuts as part of a 24-week weight loss and weight maintenance program experienced increased levels of serotonin, which can enhance mood.

And it’s likely to keep rising: next year, Canada is set to allow people to die exclusively for mental health reasons.

Only last week, a jaw-dropping story emerged of how, five years into an infuriating battle to obtain a stairlift for her home, Canadian army veteran and Paralympian Christine Gauthier was offered an extraordinary alternative.

Hearing vaping stories may deter youth from using e-cigs, the study says

A new study from Western University researchers has found that showing the health risks of vaping through expert advice and personal testimonials can help steer students away from using e-cigarettes themselves.

Published in the Journal of Health Psychology on Friday, researchers gathered 77 undergraduate students from six provinces online, all of which consistently vaped e-cigarettes or other smoking products and devices at least five to 15 times a month.

The participants were then split into groups to view one of two videos. The first video discusses the importance of living a healthy lifestyle with tips on general nutrition and exercise,
