The sobering news on booze: more than two drinks a week increases health risk

Some sobering news released this week shows drinking even a small amount of alcohol can have serious health consequences, including raising the risk for several types of cancer.

As a result, Canadian guidelines have changed to define “low-risk” alcohol consumption as no more than two drinks per week.

That’s a significant change from the last set of guidelines, which came out a decade ago, and recommended a daily limit of three drinks for men and two drinks for women and a maximum weekly limit of 10 drinks for women and 15 drinks for men to be considered “low risk.”

World Health Organization employee abducted in northern Mali

A World Health Organization employee was abducted by unidentified associates in northern Mali, the UN agency’s director-general said Tuesday.

Dr. Mahamadou Diawara was kidnapped from his car in the town of Menaka on Monday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a news conference.

“Health workers should never be a target,” Tedros said.

WHO is working with authorities to investigate the abduction.

This year the birth of Robert Burns and the Lunar New Year fell on the same date, 25th january. A time for Scots and Asian heritage to be celebrated, a time for reflection and forward planning.

Peterborough Public Health resumes student immunization enforcement – Peterborough
