Is healthy life expectancy in Northern Ireland almost ten years lower than in Ireland?

  • Healthy life expectancy (HLE) is the number of years a person can expect to live in good health: for NI, the current estimate for HLE is around 62 years while, for Ireland, it is 69.4 years
  • However, Northern Ireland uses a different definition of good health, meaning direct comparisons between the two figures are ill-advised
  • Analysis of other HLE estimates indicates the gap between NI and ROI is nowhere near ten years

On 4 March, Irish Times columnist David McWilliams claimed:

“The average person in the Republic can expect to live a healthy life for almost a full decade longer

#1 Myth Regarding Longevity, According to an Expert

While social media ads for the latest buzzy supplements—guaranteed to “transform your life or you’ll get your money back”—may want to convince you otherwise, the truth is that there’s really no single superfood or magical cure-all for healthy aging . Much as we’ve tried to find a fountain of youth, the secret to living a long and healthy life really comes down to many factors, not just one thing. It’s really about the whole picture.

In the spirit of quelling some of our society’s widespread anxiety about healthy aging (we get it—it’s rampant), we caught up with Luigi Fontana,

Healthy Sleep Pattern Cuts Risk for Premature Death

Lori Solomons

TUESDAY, March 14, 2023 (HealthDay News) — A healthy sleep pattern is associated with a lower risk for premature mortality and higher life expectancy among US adults, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, held from March 4 to 6 in New Orleans.

Frank Qian, MD, from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and colleagues used data from the National Health Interview Survey (1997 to 2018) with linkage to the National Death Index records (through 2019) to examine the association between individual and combined sleep factors and all-cause

As a doctor, I know anti-trans legislation isn’t about ‘family values.’ It costs lives.

Lawmakers using so-called culture wars to prohibit medical care for transgender people are dismantling more than medical options; they’re weakening families and communities.

These strategies vilify people for their personal identity and marginalize families at an already tenuous time.

Legislation to restrict safe options for treatment, like puberty blockers, causes fear and consternation. Some families are fleeing their home states and moving where their children can be their authentic selves and receive comprehensive medical care.

The strain over this issue isn’t confined to state capitals. It extends to one of the country’s most established newspapers, where the newsroom is battling

Donating kidney to stranger ‘awakened the beast’ in Crawford County man

MEADVILLE — Finding organ donor Eli Vendley among a dozen customers in a Meadville coffee shop was easier than ordering a caramel frappuccino.

Vendley sat toward the back of the cafe, but wore a green baseball hat emblazoned with “living donor” and a t-shirt that people recommended “donate life.”

“I bought two of the hats,” said Vendley, 31. “I wore this one and I gave the other one to Mike. It says, ‘Living Proof.'”

Mike is Michael Auen, a fellow Linesville resident who received one of Vendley’s kidneys during a Jan. 6 transplant surgeries at UPMC Hamot.
