The COVID-19 subvariant, dubbed XBB.1.16 by the World Health Organization, was first detected in the Indian subcontinent in late January. It has since been detected in 29 countries, although experts say it is likely circulating undetected in many others. So far, XBB.1.16 does not appear to have been detected in Canada.

Driver hits Westlake High School students in Thousand Oaks, killing one

Editor’s note: This story will be updated throughout the day as new information comes in.

A driver hit four Westlake High School students near the Thousand Oaks campus Tuesday afternoon, fatally injuring one.

The Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Wesley Welling, 15, of Thousand Oaks.

Ventura County Sheriff’s officials described the incident as an intentional act and said the driver had been arrested on suspicion of homicide.

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Austin Eis of Ventura County, is suspected of being involved in two other incidents Tuesday, including a stabbing at a local Walmart, authorities said.

BC ends mask mandate in health-care facilities and proof of vaccination for long-term care visitors

British Columbia is ending its universal mask mandate in health-care settings, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced Thursday.

Masks will still be required in certain higher-risk areas and for patients with COVID-19 symptoms who are seeking health care, Henry said from Victoria.

The vaccine mandate for health-care workers remains in effect.
