AI Kanater brand tahini recalled due to salmonella

Health Canada has issued a recall for AI Kanater brand tahini after salmonella contamination was detected by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)

According to the notice issued on Tuesday, the recalled product has been sold in Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The health agency asks Canadians to avoid consuming, using, selling, serving or distributing the recalled product because food contaminated with salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.

Health Canada says food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, especially for children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened

Taurine, a nutrient found in energy drinks, may promote healthy aging

Taurine, an amino acid found in meat and shellfish, is a popular supplement added to energy drinks that are touted to promote sharper brain function. While those claims are unproven, new research suggests the nutrient may help with healthy aging.

Low levels of taurine can speed up the aging process in several species of animals. Now scientists report that supplementing with nutrients may slow the process down, leading to longer, healthier lives in animals — and maybe humans, too — an international group of researchers reported Thursday in Science.

“This is a really exciting time,” said study co-author Vijay Yadav,

Burnout threatens primary care workforce and doctors’ mental health

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Melanie Gray Miller, a 30-year-old physician, wiped away tears as she described the isolation she felt after losing a beloved patient.

[–

“It was at the end of a night shift, when it seems like bad things always happen,” said Miller, who is training to become a pediatrician.

The infant had been sick for months in the Medical University of South Carolina’s pediatric intensive care unit and the possibility that he might not improve was obvious, Miller recalled during an April meeting with physicians and hospital administrators. But the suddenness of his death still caught her

Grape Consumption Modulates Human Microbiome, Study Suggests

In new research, scientists from Western New England University and elsewhere investigated the potential of grapes to modulate the human microbiome and thus influence health.

Dave et al. demonstrated that grape consumption does not perturb the eubiotic state of the microbiome with normal, healthy human subjects; grape consumption does change the taxonomic composition of the microbiome, enzyme levels, KEGG pathways, and the metabolome. Image credit: NoName_13.

Study: 40 per cent of Canadians say habits worsened during pandemic

More than three years after COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, a new study is looking at how the international health crisis has changed the lifestyle habits of Canadians.

The research, conducted by McGill University in Montreal, found that 60 per cent of the roughly 1,600 Canadians surveyed said their lifestyle habits either improved or remained the same during the COVID-19 pandemic.

But the study also found that 40 per cent of respondents reported less healthy lifestyle habits formed during the health crisis.

Researchers assessed data from across the country during the first wave of COVID-19 infections. They measured healthy

MRI scan of brain

Colorado researchers theorize that fructose metabolism may be the driving force behind Alzheimer’s Disease pathology. Diets high in sugar and high glycemic index carbohydrates would exacerbate the problem. Salt may also play a role. Fructose is a simple sugar (a monosaccharide) typically found in fruit, honey, and some vegetables. Table sugar is sucrose, a combination of fructose and a glucose molecule. High-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is added to many processed foods as a bulk sweetener. From the article linked above:

An ancient human foraging instinct, fueled by fructose production in the

Health workers slam newly privatized Alberta hospital cafeterias over empty shelves, quality

Some health-care workers say the privatization of hospital cafeterias in Calgary and Edmonton has led to empty shelves, higher prices and a dramatic degradation in the quality of the food available to patients, staff and visitors.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) contracted vendors to run the food retail service at hospitals in both cities last year and the outsourcing of those operations has taken place over the last few months.

“Everything seems to be fatty, carb-y, and just congealed,” said Dr. Stephanie Cooper, an obstetrician who works at Foothills Medical Centre.

AHS is acknowledging that it has received complaints and says

Boston hospital employee charged after allegedly bringing rifle to hospital

A Massachusetts General Hospital employee was alleged to have suffered a mental health emergency when bringing a rifle to work, according to Boston police.

Police got a call Wednesday night around 8 pm regarding a person in distress, armed with a hunting rifle on the hospital’s campus.

Witnesses told police the man stated he heard “God telling him” to do this and that “the police were out to kill him.”

A police report filed after the incident later said a hospital security officer was able to reach out to the suspect, who investigators said had the rifle covered with a
